Community Connections

In March, we are highlighting agencies that support families and students with developmental disabilities and promote gender equity.

Developmental Disabilities Ombuds

The Office of the Developmental Disabilities Ombuds (DD Ombuds) is a private, independent office focused on improving the lives of persons with developmental disabilities in Washington State.

Thurston County Specialized Recreation

Thurston County Specialized Recreation offers a variety of engaging activities in collaboration with Olympia, Lacey, and Tumwater. Tailored for individuals with developmental and/or physical disabilities, but open to individuals of all abilities, this program fosters growth, community integration, and friendship. Through shared experiences, participants build self-esteem, independence, and lasting connections. Most activities are suitable for those aged 16 and above unless otherwise specified.

YWCA Olympia

YWCA Olympia is focused on our mission of eliminating racism and sexism to advance the social, political, and economic status of all women and girls. All of our activities place the leadership and wisdom of Women of Color at the center. We do this while also seeking to engage people of all genders, races, classes, and abilities in the collective work of the YWCA’s vision: All People are valued, live free from oppression, and thrive in a just society.

West Olympia Rotary

  • West Olympia Rotary looking for host families for an Inbound exchange student next school year.  West Olympia Rotary has a history of sponsoring Capital HS inbound and outbound exchange students.
  • This year the club is helping sponsor a girl from Brazil and will sponsor a CHS junior girl for exchange in Belgium next year.
  • To complete the “exchange” our club needs to host a student from an overseas country (TBD).
  • Usually we line up 3 families to host for 3-4 months each during the school year.  This is an excellent opportunity for a family to learn about another culture, and for the incoming student to immerse themselves in the day to day life of an American family.  Host families can be reassured that their family and the student will be supported by the Rotary Club.
  • The student will receive a monthly stipend.  According to US Dept of State regulations, host families cannot be paid to host.
  • Host families need to be vetted, so please contact one of the following Rotarians as soon as possible if interested.
  • If you think your family might be interested in hosting an inbound foreign exchange student for 3 months during the 2025-26 academic year, please contact Dirk Havlak at 360-791-2315, [email protected], or Attila Talaber at 360-791-3310, [email protected]
