Objectives
I believe that it is beneficial for students to study math for a variety of reasons. Mathematics helps students to think in a logical manner in a variety of situations. The study of Mathematics can also allow students broaden their studies in other disciplines. And for many students the study of Mathematics may keep the doors open to a variety of educational and career opportunities.

Grading
Grading in this class will closely follow the guidelines below (adjustments may be needed)
Opening Problems 3 points/day
Homework 5 points
Quizzes 15-40 points
Tests 60-100 points
Projects 0-100 points
Final Exam 90-120 points
Rule Grade 40 points
Grades are calculated on a total points basis.
93% - 100% A 70% - 72.9% C -
90% - 92.9% A- 67% - 69.9% D+ Note: grades are not
87% - 89.9% B+ 63% - 66.9% D rounded.
83% - 86.9% B 60% - 62.9% D-
80% - 82.9% B- 0% - 59.9% F
77% - 79.9% C+
73% - 76.9% C

Homework
Homework is crucial to a student learning and their grade. There is homework given almost every day in class. Students who do not do homework will have a very difficult time passing this class. Homework is turned in as a packet, approximately every week. I try to keep an updated list of assignments on my webpage, which can be found by visiting the Capital High School web site.
Tests
Tests generally occur at the end of a chapter and are usually done on an individual basis. Occasionally students are allowed a small amount of notes to use on the test. Because of their nature, and higher point value, tests are a larger part of a student grade.
Quizzes
Periodically there will be quizzes in this class. Quizzes generally cover the most recent material but can cover any material that a student can reasonably be expected to know. Missed quizzes cannot be made up. A student can usually expect a quiz or a test during each week of the trimester.
Tardies
If you are not in the room when the bell rings, or if you leave before the bell, you are tardy. At the end of each trimester students will lose points for each tardy they accumulate.
Food and Drink
There is no food or drink in this room; students lose points for violating this rule.
Calculators
Students are encouraged to have, and use, calculators during this course.
There occasionally will be times in this class when calculators are not allowed.
Cell Phones and other electronics
Cell phones are to be turned off, and kept out of sight during class time. Students who violate this rule will either lose their phones till the end of the school day. You will need to go to the office to claim them.
Music devices can be used after the homework assignment has been give for the day.
Other devices such as games are not to be used during class time.
Extra Help
The best time to get extra help from me is in the mornings, or the first half hour after school ends. If you need to meet at a different time please make arrangements with the teacher.
