Graduation Walking Policy
In order to participate in Capital’s commencement ceremony, seniors must
be enrolled by third trimester, and must maintain satisfactory progress, in
the proper number and type of courses that will satisfy all graduation requirements.
This may include evening courses or correspondence courses that are approved
by a CHS counselor and completed before commencement ceremonies. Summer school
credits may not be planned to establish a student’s eligibility to walk
in the graduation ceremony.
International Baccalaureate Program
Pre-IB courses are available to students in grades 9-10. The IB program officially
begins in grade 11. Students enrolling in pre-IB and IB courses are required
to make a full year commitment to the program. Students are encouraged to become
full diploma candidates and test in six areas. However, students have the option
of testing in one or more areas and earning an IB certificate.
Advisory
Each student is assigned to the same advisory teacher for four years. Students
attend advisory to obtain grade reports, locator cards, scheduling information
and access counseling information and student government information.
Scheduling
Each spring students will complete a planning worksheet during advisory for
the following year’s classes. Student schedules will be completed during
the summer based upon the student’s spring requests. Students will pick
up their year long schedule in August. A mini-arena will be offered before the
beginning of each trimester to assist students with schedule changes that meet
established criteria.
Senior Status Notification
Credit checks are conducted in the spring of every student’s junior year.
The following September, every students’ official Senior Status Notification
letter is mailed home. Students are expected to double check the letter and
bring back a signed copy in the fall of their senior year.
Report Cards/Progress Reports
Progress Reports are given to students at the 6-week mark during each trimester.
Final grades/report cards are given to students at the end of each trimester
(mid-December, end of March and beginning of July). All progress reports and
report cards are mailed home. Any discrepancy with the report card should be
discussed with the teacher.
Laws Pertaining to Delinquent or Lost Materials
Grade reports will be withheld from a student who has lost or defaced property
belonging to the school. As stated in House Bill No. 462, “Any school
district whose property has been lost or willfully cut, defaced, or injured,
may withhold the grades, diploma, and transcript of the person responsible for
the damage or loss until the pupil or the pupil’s parent or guardian has
paid for the damages. When the pupil, parent, or guardians are unable to pay
for damages, the school district shall provide a program of voluntary work for
the pupil in lieu of the payment of monetary damages. Upon completion of the
voluntary work, the grades, diploma, and transcript of the pupil shall be released.”
Withdraw/Fail Policy
Students wishing to withdraw from a class must do so before 10 school days into
each trimester to avoid an “F” on the transcript. After 10 days
an “F” grade will appear on the student transcript and may only
be replaced if the student retakes the same course during the same trimester
the following year. No class fees will be refunded after the first 10 days.
Incompletes
Students are given 10 school days after report cards are first distributed to
make up an incomplete. If the incomplete is not made up, the student will automatically
receive an “F” grade on the transcript.
Independent Study
Independent Study is discouraged and only offered under extenuating circumstances.
Students who need an independent study contract must make arrangements with
their counselor prior to the first day of classes for the given trimester. The
Department Chair, the teacher, and the principal must approve the contract prior
to beginning the program.
Repeated Class
A student receiving an “F” grade in a class may sign up to repeat
the class without prior permission. The “F” grade will be replaced
with the passing grade on the transcript. Those students who passed and wish
to repeat a class must have prior approval from the department coordinator in
that discipline. If a course is repeated to improve a grade, only the highest
grade shall be included in the calculation of the grade point average. Credits
attempted for courses taken more than once to improve a grade may count toward
the number of credits required for graduation on the condition that the letter
grades earned for all attempts are included in the calculation of the students
GPA. See (WAC 180-57-050) for further information.
Finals Policy
Finals may be administered in all courses at the end of each trimester. Students
are required to take their final exams during the final exam time frame. If
a student is unable to be present during the exam time, he/she may take the
exam upon his/her return to school. No early finals are to be administered.
The last three days of the trimester are slated for block scheduling to accommodate
extended times for exams.
Make-up Work
It is the responsibility of all students to make arrangements to make up assignments
following an excused absence from school. Each teacher will establish his or
her own guidelines regarding an appropriate time frame for makeup work. However,
instructors are not required to give make-up work for daily work missed due
to truancy.
Olympia School District Health and Fitness Requirement
(Effective for students entering 9th grade after July 1, 2004)
Grade 9: All students shall be enrolled in a one-year course
of study (180 hours of instruction) in Health and Fitness Education during their
9th grade year. Course work shall be directed towards meeting EALRs through
benchmark three plus the development of a “Personal Health and Fitness
Plan”. Students shall not be excused from this course of study.
Grade 10-12: All students shall complete state credit requirements
in Health and Fitness through Health and Fitness course work regularly offered
at Capital High School. Students may apply for a waiver for 150 hours of supervised
athletic activity completed away from school in accordance with district procedures.
Criteria for Waiving Health & Fitness
Class of 2007 ONLY
Waivers will only be granted when the number of trimesters required to graduate
equals the number of physical education classes needed to graduate. Example:
If a student still needs all 6 PE classes, he/she may begin requesting a waiver
in the fall of his/her junior year (when there are 6 trimesters remaining until
graduation).
Waivers will be granted if a student is meeting one of the
following criteria:
Student is taking a full schedule* of 6 academic solids** OR 5 academic solids
and one elective either deemed important to the student’s academic goals
or part of the student’s chosen career path.
* A “full schedule” refers to 6 classes total. TA’s
are not considered a class.
** An “academic solid” must be an English, Social Studies, Math,
Science, World
Language or IB level class.
Student is taking a full schedule of 4 academic solids and 2 electives in that
student’s established
Career path. *
* An “established career path” requires that a student has been
taking classes in that
career path for the majority of his/her high school career. NOTE: Students
in this situation
must see their counselor to get prior approval from the Principal (before
the trimester begins)
in order to request a waiver.
Student is taking a full schedule of 3 academic solids at CHS and 3 classes
at New Market Skill Center.
Student is taking an equivalent full schedule load of academic solids at SPSCC,
or a combination of
of academic solids at SPSCC and CHS that equals a full schedule.
Student is participating in a “directed athletic activity” which
is supervised by a third party (who is
a non-family member). This activity must include at least 50 hours of
activity during the dates of the
trimester in which the waiver is requested.
Student must be taking a full schedule during the trimester in which a waiver
is requested.
The waiver form must be signed by the student’s coach (for CHS sports
only) OR documentation of the 50 hours needs to be provided by the supervisor
of the student’s activity. See your counselor for a daily log form.
Student has a medical release from their doctor that encompasses the trimester
dates during which
the waiver is requested.
Student has an IEP or 504 accommodation that prohibits him/her from taking Health
& Fitness.
Procedure:
--Check with your counselor BEFORE the trimester starts to make sure your request
for a waiver will be approved.
-Ask your counselor or counseling secretary for a Health & Fitness waiver
form during the last two weeks of the trimester in which you are waiving Health
& Fitness.
--Get the PE waiver form signed by your parent/guardian and return it to the
counseling secretary or counselor by the end of the trimester in which you are
waiving PE.
Procedures for Requesting Waiver for Part or All of the Required Second Credit in Health and Fitness Education (CLASS OF 2008 AND BEYOND)
All students must successfully complete two credits of health and fitness during
their four years of high school. This requirement includes classes in both health
education and fitness education.
Students may apply for and receive a waiver for all or part of the second year
of the fitness portion of this requirement.
To waive a complete year: 150 hours
To waive two trimesters 100 hours
To waive one semester 75 hours
To waive one trimester 50 hours
Students must meet three basic requirements:
Receive a passing grade in the required 9th Grade Health and Fitness Course.
Be an active participant in school athletic programs and/or directed community-based
sports/activities for the designated number of hours during their sophomore
and/or junior year; and,
Be continually in six subject matter classes each trimester/semester prior to
applying for a waiver and maintain continual enrollment in six subject matter
classes during grades 10 through 12; (TA late start/early release will NOT count
as a subject matter class).
Pick up a Fitness Requirement Waiver Form from your school counselor.
Record all activities and times taking place after February 13, 2006.
The school coach or person who is supervising a community-based sport/activity
program must sign the form.
After completing the required number of hours of school athletics and/or directed
community- based sports/activities, the completed and signed Fitness Requirement
Waiver Form must be completed and submitted to the school counselor before June
15, of the student’s junior year.
If a student does not complete all of the conditions and requirements, a waiver
will not be granted and the student must take a health and fitness class to
complete the graduation requirement.
A waiver of this type does not affect a student’s grade point, or will
not allow a student to graduate with less credits than required. A fitness class
waiver only allows students to take another subject area class.
Transcripts
Any student or parent may request an official transcript through the Registrar’s
office. A form must be completed for this request along with paying a $2.00
fee. The Registrar will mail the transcript or the requesting student or parent
may pick it up. Transcripts will not be mailed or given out if the student has
an outstanding fine.
Yearbooks
Pictures will be taken at schedule pick-up in August for ID/ASB purposes. Yearbooks
can be purchased in the fall and throughout the school year. They are distributed
before the end of school in June.
