Special Note About Activities
Students who participate in school related activities and athletics are expected to attend all classes on the day of the scheduled activity. When the activity occurs during the school week, students are expected to attend all classes the following day. When the activity occurs on a weekend, attendance in all classes the previous Friday is expected. Students who do not comply with these regulations may be declared ineligible and prohibited from participating in the activity.

Activities at Capital High School range from academic and athletic competitions, special interest groups, and social functions. Many of these activities include recognition such as varsity letters, awards, and certificates of achievement. Get involved and be an active member of the CHS community. Please check with Mrs. Dominiak, Activities Director, for further information regarding Clubs and Activities.

Interscholastic Activities

Capital High School is an “AAA” school, a member of the Western Cascade Conference, and the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association. Our philosophy is that every student gets an opportunity to be a part of a team.

Sports Eligibility (Athletic Director: Mark Wells 596-8070)

Capital High School has a Pay-to-Play fee for each sport season. Check with the ASB office for the current cost for the 2006-2007 school year. The Capital High School Athletic Code is available in the ASB office and should be carefully reviewed by all participants in the various sports and activities. The following highlights are of particular concern:

Student participants must pass six (6) full time subjects during the previous trimester to be eligible. A student who has been in regular attendance and has failed to fulfill this requirement in the previous semester shall be placed on probation for a period of five (5) weeks from the first day of scheduled practice per WIAA regulation 28.6.5. At the end of this probation period, if the student is passing six (6) full-time subjects, he/she shall be reinstated for full participation. Athletic administration will check progress grade reports at six (6) and twelve (12) weeks. If a student participant is failing a subject at either of these grade checks he/she shall become immediately ineligible for competition. Procedures for grade improvement are included in the comprehensive athletic/activities code.

Students who are absent for a part of the school day may only participate in the day’s practice or game if they bring a valid doctor’s appointment note for the time missed. Students with partial day absences due to illness or non-health professional appointments will not be allowed to participate.

Student athletes and those in related activities must be in full attendance in order to remain eligible to participate. The Athletic Director or an administrator must clear any absences. This also applies to tardies. Students who violate this standard shall be dismissed from the day’s practice or game.

Participants are to abide by all the rules and regulations stated in the school’s Student Handbook, Athletic Code and the Olympia School District’s policies for student conduct. Failure to comply will result in discipline and/or suspension from participation. Administered discipline is cumulative for the duration of high school eligibility.

The use of tobacco, alcohol, legend drugs and controlled substances are prohibited as set forth in Olympia School District policy No. 3200. Violations shall result is serious penalties outlined in the comprehensive Athletic/Activities code.

A participant must present a completed eligibility packet, including current medical examination, insurance coverage and a copy of the Athletic Code signed by the student participant and parent/legal guardian prior to initial participation. The Student Athlete Information Sheet must be complete even if the information is redundant.

ASB Card
Student activities such as athletics, student government, newspaper, debate, dances, and assemblies are financed by student funds. One source of revenue comes from the student ASB card. This card provides admittance to all regular season home athletic events. It permits the student to purchase Western Cascade Conference tickets away from school at a reduced price and makes the student a participating member of the Capital High School Student Body Association. The price of the ASB card is $35.00 and may be purchased any time during the school year. ALL STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATE IN AN ASB SPONSORED ACTIVITY OR CLUB ARE REQUIRED TO PURCHASE AN ASB CARD.

Fees
Many of the activities and sports offered at Capital require a fee. Parents should be aware that students are informed of the cost requirements when signing up for the activity. Financial planning for some of these activities may be appropriate. All fees are paid to the ASB office. If a student cannot afford a classroom or workbook fee there is a special fund for that purpose at the ASB office. Students will not be denied access to a class because of the inability to pay fees. College entrance tests (SAT/ACT) have fee waivers as do the PSAT/PLAN.

Activity Period

Activity Period is held typically on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday morning of each month and is designed to allow students to meet for club meetings and other activities. The student activities calendar has these dates scheduled for the 2004-2005 school year; however, a student should check the revised monthly calendar or the website for changes.

Schedule D
Students are not required to be on campus until the first period class beginning at 10:00 a.m. Buses will run on normal schedule. Students arriving on campus before 9:45 a.m. may utilize the library, computer lab, gym or commons. Students may not have unsupervised access to classrooms before 9:45 a.m.

Dance Guidelines and Guest Policy
NO GUESTS will be allowed without prior approval from the Director of Activities. A form may be picked up from the ASB office and must be returned no later than the Tuesday of the week of the dance. The CHS student requesting a guest be admitted will need to check with Ms. Dominiak, Activities Director on Friday to verify his/her admittance to the dance. Guests will need to show identification at the door.
