A.  WHAT IS THE CULMINATING PROJECT?

 

·     New WA State graduation requirement

·     Begins with the class of 2008

·     Self-directed project of the student’s choice

·     Designed to give students a chance to demonstrate they have the skills necessary to succeed after high school graduation

 

         B. WHEN CAN STUDENTS DO THE CULMINATING PROJECT?

 

·     Students complete the culminating project during their senior year.

 

C.     HOW WILL STUDENTS COMPLETE THE PROJECT?

 

·     During the 2007-2008 school year, students will meet regularly with their CP supervisor.

              -check progress

              -turn in paperwork

              -seek advice

              -have the project components evaluated

 

D.     WHAT ARE THE COMPONENTS OF THE PROJECT?

 

·     Each culminating project will consist of six components:

              -Proposal

              -Annotated Bibliography

              -Reflective Journal

              -Product/End Result

              -Culminating Project Write-Up

              -Presentation

 

·     See p. 10 in the CP Guide for a brief description of these components.

 

 

 

 

 

E.      HOW IS THE CULMINATING PTOJECT GUIDE ORGANIZED?

 

·     Each project component is described in detail.  In addition, a rubric the supervisor uses to grade each component is included in the guide.

 

·     For example, the Project Proposal Component is discussed on p. 11 and 12.  A grading rubric is included on p. 41.  

 

·     A second example is the Annotated Bibliography Component.  It is discussed on p. 15.  A grading rubric is included on p. 43. 

 

·     Additional material is available for some components.  For example: 

 

         -If you choose to work with a mentor or field expert,

         there is additional paperwork to fill out for your project proposal on p. 27-31.  Examples of         successful and prohibited projects are listed on p.

         23-25.

 

         -Annotated bibliography examples are included on

         p.53-54.

 

F.      CAN STUDENTS WORK WITH A PARTNER?

 

·     Yes, students can work with a partner, but each partner has to submit the project components separately to his or her CP Supervisor.  In addition, each partner will make his or her own presentation.

 

 

G.     CAN STUDENTS USE A PROJECT THEY HAVE DONE IN ANOTHER CLASS FOR THE CULMINATING PROJECT?

 

·     Yes, however the project must be modified to satisfy the requirements for the 6 components of the Culminating Project.

 

 

 

H.     WHAT HAPPENS IF STUDENTS DO NOT COMPLETE THIS PROJECT?

 

·     All components must be completed by the June deadline in order for a student to graduate.

 

·     Students have opportunities to repeat the process or re-do those components of their project that fail to meet standard.

 

·     It is the student’s responsibility to:

              -monitor progress

              -attend meetings with the CP Supervisor

              -complete work according to assigned deadlines

 

I.      WHAT IF A STUDENT HAS AN I.E.P. OR 504 PLAN?

 

·     Depending on the IEP, or 504 plan, the project will be tailored to accommodate the student’s abilities.

 

·     The student will work with his or her case manager to set up appropriate modifications of project expectations on a case-by-case basis.

 

·     The CP Supervisor will have a copy of these accommodations and/or modifications.

 

J.      NEXT YEAR

 

·     Students will meet regularly (advisories) with their faculty CP Supervisor to check progress, turn in paperwork, seek advice and have their project evaluated.

 

·     There will be a variety of student seminars offered before and after school next year to assist students in addressing each of the 6 components. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

K.     WHAT ARE THE TENTATIVE DUE DATES FOR 2007-2008

 

     -Proposal:  October

     -Annotated Bibliography:   Early February

     -Reflective Journal:  November, January, presentation day

     -Product:  Due 4 weeks prior to presentation

     -Write up:  Due 4 weeks prior to presentation

     -Presentations will be during March or April WASL weeks

 

·     A formal schedule will be distributed at the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year.

 

L.      HOW DO I GET MORE  INFORMATION?

 

·     The Culminating Project is new to everyone at CHS.  As the process evolves, information about changes, due dates, helpful hints, etc. will be disseminated via:

                  -CHS website

                  -CHS Newsletter

                  -Daily Announcements

                  -CP Supervisory Meetings

 

M.    CAN STUDENTS START THEIR PROJECTS NOW?

 

·     If students want to work on their projects over the summer, they will need to keep in mind all the components they have to complete to satisfy the project requirements.  They need to thoroughly read and understand the Culminating Project Guide before they begin. 

 

·     Before doing the project, students should:

 

         -Develop their project proposal so they have a

         well-thought out plan for the project and a

         clear idea for their product .

         -Do research and produce an annotated    bibliography .

         -Keep a journal to prove they have satisfied the

         minimum project hours.

         -If applicable, document their activities using photos

         or videotaping.

·     All project components will be turned in to supervisors next year on scheduled due dates. 

N.  WHERE DO I GET MY COPY OF THE CP GUIDE?

 

·     Each student will be issued one copy of the CP Guide.  Most of these were distributed by supervisors at the advisory on 4/26.  If you have not been issued one, you may pick it up from Mrs. Cope in Room I-3 during periods 4, 5, or 6.

 

·     If you lose your copy of the CP Guide you may purchase a replacement in the ASB Office for 3$

 

 

O.  WHERE DO I FIND OUT WHO MY CP SUPERVISOR IS?

 

Supervisor assignments are posted in the hallways by the office, counseling center, and near the entrance to each pod.  You may also inquire in the office or the counseling center.
