9th Grade Parent Letter
December 2007
Dear Parent/Guardian
You are receiving this letter because you have a child in ninth grade.
Washington public school students have four statewide high school graduation requirements: earn state and local course credits; complete a “High School and Beyond Plan”; complete a “Culminating Project”; and meet the state’s reading, writing and math standards. Meeting the state’s reading, writing and math standards starts with students taking the High School Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) in those subject areas.
Most students take the High School WASL as 10th-graders. But we know some students are ready to take and pass these tests as ninth-graders, so we like to give them the option to do so.
If your child wants to take the High School WASL this spring, here is what you need to know:
- Ninth-graders should not take the WASL for practice or “just to see how they might do.” This could be a discouraging and frustrating experience for a student who may just need one more year of learning to be successful on the test. The High School WASL was designed to be taken when a student is in 10th grade.
- Your child can register to take one or more of the WASL tests as a ninth-grader. For example, your child may be ready now to take reading and math but may want to wait until 10th grade to take writing. (Your child may also pre-register for any of the tests and then decide – without penalty – not to test because s/he is not ready.)ß Students have five opportunities to take and pass each of the WASL tests (reading, writing and math). Students who test as ninth-graders use one of their five opportunities.
- Students who pass any WASL test in ninth grade do not have to take that test again in 10th grade. Any test that a student does not take or does not pass in ninth grade will be given to that student in 10th grade.
- All schools follow the same High School WASL testing schedule:
- Reading: March 10-11
- Writing: March 12-13
- Math: April 15-16
- Science: Not available to ninth-graders
- You will receive your child’s scores in September.
Ninth-graders who want to take the spring 2007 High School WASL need to register between Dec. 10, 2007 and Jan. 14, 2008.
Online registration: www.k12.wa.us/waslregistration. Toll-free phone registration: 1.866.400.WASL (9275). Before registering, you will need to get a student ID number from Capital High School. If you have Internet access and would like to look at questions that have been on the High School WASL, please visit: http://www.k12.wa.us/Assessment/WASL/testquestions.aspx.
Please contact Capital High School if you have any questions about this choice for your child. We’re here to help you and want your child to be successful.
Sincerely,
