Principal's Report: The school year had a smooth start despite summer issues with mold and construction. Construction is now outside.
There was a great opening assembly. There will be a Pep Assembly before the Spaghetti Bowl.
Advisory- 9th and 10th graders met with advisors to begin work on their "High School and Beyond" plans. Juniors met on the mezzanine to talk about college issues, PSATs, etc. Seniors met in the theater to discuss college preparations, scholarships, Homecoming Court. Class meetings will take place on Wednesday to plan Homecoming week, October 10-15.
The Open House is scheduled for October 11.
Enrollment is down a bit: 1493 head count, 1413 FTE count.
New classes: CHS hired a nationally-recognized teacher for sports medicine, who will also be teaching Social Studies for now. There is an on-line math class, APEX math, offered first to sophomores who didn't pass one trimester of Algebra. It costs about $1500 per year to access it; the funds are taken out of the Medicaid reserve. 25 students can be enrolled, and ten others may have access. It can also address Pre-algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2.
Progress on the 2008 graduation requirements - Increase the use of EALRs and GLEs in instruction. There is a district-level task force on math, and a need for more lab work in Science was identified. Students thought it might be helpful to have WASL-like questions all year, in addition to right before the WASL.
Membership: ASB by-laws require one ASB officer or delegate to serve on the Site Council. A motion was made, seconded, and approved to add the same provision to Site Council bylaws. Becca Ellen will be serving in this role for the 05-06 school year. The Site Council formally accepted Laura Cannon-Robinson, Bob Neumann, Lyn Le, Becca Ellen and Paddy O'Brien as members. The council discussed membership issues around term length and maximum number of parent members. The by-laws indicate a term of two years, the role of the co-chairperson in meeting facilitation, and no maximum number of parent members. The council recognized the need to not have a number of parents that overwhelms the number of staff and students. Two new parents indicated an interest in joining the council. Rhonda Brooks and Sue Anderson will resign to make way for new members, although both may continue to attend or participate on committees. New members Ed Thorpe, Valerie Lynn, Terra Hegge, and Kathleen Burns were added to the Council.
Included in the Site Council packet was the School Improvement Plan for 05-06. Goals include specific targets for increases in WASL scores and the graduation rate, further developing the Culminating Project and the "High School and Beyond" plan, and further enhancing the supportive learning environment. The Council discussed some issues around these goals.
The meeting adjourned at 7:06 pm.
