Volunteer Opportunities

Father/Daughter Dance!!!!!

For those of you that don't know, the Father/Daughter Dances are the largest fund-raisers for the Junior Class each year. Not only do these dances bring in money but they have developed into a very positive community event. Last year's attendance for both events exceeded 1,000 people! It takes a very large volunteer base to make this happen. As the sophomore class, we have been asked to help. The needs are:

Fri., Jan. 25 set-up 3:00 - 9:00p.m.

Sat., Jan. 26 dance 6:00 - 9:30p.m

Fri., Feb. 1 set-up 3:00 - 9:00p.m.

Sat., Feb. 2 dance 6:00 - 9:30p.m.

If you are available for even an hour, your time will be appreciated! All help is welcome...the entire family, friends, students.

Please contact Susan Lindskog @ 866-3936 or VOLKL9@msn.com or any questions or to sign up for a specific task.

Panelists are needed to evaluate Senior Culminating Projects. This is a great way to gain insight to these required projects. Presentations will be March 10 to 14 and April 14 to 18th. Contact Ivy Marple at 596-8077 or imarple@osd.wednet.edu to volunteer.

An Advertising Assistant could help Teri Weaver (teriweaver@comcast.net) get the word out about upcoming Parent Forum events. The next forum will be a class on self-defense for mothers and daughters on Feb 6 6:30-8:30. It will be led by local police officers.

Palapalooza help will be needed for March 8th. Contact Cynthia Sanderson at cynthiasa@comcast.net

Grad Night Volunteers will be needed on June 10, 2008 to assist with bus boarding. This is a great way to understand what grad night has become (way cooler, for sure). Contact Bette Hall (betteah@hotmail.com) to volunteer.

What happened:

The meeting opened about 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 with the introduction of CHS Booster Club Co-President, Susan Rivera-Lee ( svrlee@hotmail.com or 791-3505).

Susan informed the group that the Booster club funds $50,000 to $60,000 dollars a year in support of WIAA activities, which include sports, debate, music and cheer groups.

Current CHS Booster Club goals include increasing school spirit, building parent and alumni involvement, reaching out to middle schools and to increase funding. The Booster club is also working to update award boards and obtain mirrors for the weight room. Booster volunteers help with ASB picture taking, fall sports sign ups, concession stand sales and an annual tailgate party and annual auction. Future meetings will be on the first Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m. at the Capital Medical Center.

CHSPO President, Ed Thorpe, spoke about the need to better coordinate the three CHS parent groups so we all effectively support the students and staff.

CHS Principal, Nancy Faaren, gave a school update. We learned that if Griffin school is closed, then Griffin-to-Capital buses do not run.

Nancy also spoke about the senior culminating projects. There is a journal check January 9 and the paper is due Feb 13th. Presentations will be March 10 to 14 and April 14 to 18th. Volunteers are needed to participate in evaluation panels.

Ed Thorpe brought up support for the next school levy. Bette Hall told the group that the CHSPO had previously made a small donation to cover printing costs for doorbell hangers. Ellen Rice made a motion to make a $100 donation to the levy committee. The motion was seconded by Cynthia Wolfe. Beth Schilling asked if we had limits on making donations on political issues. The answer is no, as we are not a 501 c 3 nonprofit. Ron Gross requested that any donations that had a political aspect be limited to levy work. The motion carried.

Ed Thorpe asked for better support of the CHS newsletter. All committees are asked to forward pertinent information to Elizabeth Asher (elizasher@comcast.net) in a timely manner. Amy Dreesbach in the front office has newsletter deadlines. The next deadline is March 11 so material needs to be to Elizabeth by March 9.

Nancy Faaren complimented the First Friday snacks for teachers and noted that more and better conversations were happening. Thank you to Kathy Ketcher for making this happen.

Parent Forum

Teri Weaver said the next forum will be a self defense class for mothers and daughters. Date will be in February. The class will be led by police officers, including our school resource officer. Teri could use help in marketing/advertising the forums.

Class Reports

Lori Buma gave the freshman class report. She said they are working on collecting contact emails and developing fundraising plans.

Cori Mayes (mayesdc@comcast.net) is the contact person for the sophomore class. The sophomore class is assisting with the Father/Daughter dances (see volunteer information above),

Cynthia Wolfe suggested more continuity for the future Father/Daughter Dances. Discussion followed. Cynthia will draft job descriptions for the next meeting.

Bette Hall gave an update on the senior class. Bacchalaureate will be June 1. An appropriate and interesting motivational speaker has been found. Paula Liechty is the chair of that event (paulalie@comcast.net).

Bette advised that more students are needed for the senior party night. Expenses are expected to be $22,000 for the party and $5,000 for transportation. Currently registration is $135 but it will soon rise to $150.00 per student.

Respectfully submitted,

Ellen Rice
