December 2007 Minutes

1. Michelle Anderson, Vice Principal, told us about a new program available to CHS called Challenge Day Program, a nationwide program with adult and youth participants which has won awards. It is a day-long powerful and active program which is designed to unit and empower participants to take back into their student communities methods to enhance positive peer support instead of negative interactions.

The program will be paid for by grant from Village to Village nonprofit.

The 100 student participants will be selected by the school. 20 Adult volunteer participants will be needed and those interested in the Program should contact Jodi Kanda at 866-9618 who is the Parent Coordinator.

CHS students have been to Summits, a program which gets students to share leadership in the school. They already have decided what top issues they would like to address this year at CHS:

1. bathroom stocking adequately

2. food service choices

3. ways and activities to include special needs students more often

4. events which recognize the students more often (talent shows, arts nights, etc)

5. overall school cleanliness

6. more dances without hassling the students about HOW they dance

The good news is that there seemed to no concerns about safety or harassment issues.

2. Nancy Faaren, Principal, gave us a school update.

The school received letters and phone calls from other schools, coaches, parents, and students about negative behavior at athletic events, especially comments which were crude, derogatory, racist, or sexist. This type of behavior could have cost Capital a loss of League. A task force composed of students, teachers, parents, and the Principal met and developed Capital Pride guidelines for behavior of the audience at games. This list has been handed out at games and now things are too quiet: Some people have misinterpreted it to mean that no yelling or active reaction is allowed. That is NOT the message intended. The message is that disrespectful, DEROGATORY, negative, profane, angry words and behavior are not allowed. Booing or complaining loudly about the decisions of coaches or officials is not good sportsmanship. CHEERING and applauding, positive yelling and good sportsmanship is what Capital audiences should display and is encouraged.

3. Teri WeaverŐs goal is to increase the Parent Forums to once a month. January will teach some Self Defense methods. Parents and students are encouraged to attend.

Finance Report

Debra Miles, Treasurer reported about plans for the Father Daughter dances Jan 26 and Feb 2nd this year. VOLUNTEERS will be needed to decorate on those dates as well as the Friday afternoons Jan 25 and Feb 1st. Cynthia Sorenson of the CHSPO and Foundation is Chair for the Palapalooza event for Mothers and Sons, March 8th. Please put those dates on your calendars. The whole CHSPO and many other parents and students should help with these three major fundraisers for our organization and students.

The CHSPO has over $15,000 in funds. Over $9,000 will be given out to the teachers in grants for the classes, leaving us some cushion until the dance tickets are sold. E script payments from the grocery stores is always delayed by months. The Top Food cards had to be pre-bought, so that cost was floated by the CHSPO earlier in the year.

Classroom Grants

The Grant committee (about 8 people from the CHSPO) reviewed the grant proposals submitted in the Fall by various teachers. The good news is that there was an unprecedented number of grant requests, total amount requested, as well as amount to give! Unfortunately the demand exceeded the supply, but the committee recommended that the CHSPO vote to fully fund 7 out of the 13 requests. Two of the nonfunded could probably get funds from elsewhere. Three of the nonfunded had other requests from their dept. funded and hopefully can resubmit their additional requests in the spring.

Teachers will need to submit invoices to Debra Miles, treasurer, to get their funds.

Membership

Parent Org membership is still down. Suggestion was made to give lists of parents for members of the PO to contact personally by phone.

Newsletter

The next edition should contain mention of the Father/Daughter dances and Palapalooza dates.

Staff Appreciation

This First Friday morning monthly event has been a great success. Teachers enjoy the food and chance to communicate with each other as well as parents helping.

The Administration also gave a brunch to the whole staff which was appreciated.

Grocery Rebates

$25 Top Food cards are available for easy small gifting to employees, newspaper delivery folk, students, etc.

Junior Class report

Teri Weaver and Susan Lindskog reps. Working on the dance fundraiser. The class has booked Grad Nights for their Senior Party next year. This is a very safe and effective, fun, easy program for the Party.

Senior Class report

Grad Night is doing their Grad Party and they were able to obtain a bit of a discount because the Junior Class will use the company also. A letter for donations from parents was sent out. The hope is to be able to use the funds to pay for a few more tickets to the Grad Party which some students cannot afford otherwise. We would like as high a percentage of the class to be together as possible.
