Meeting Minutes

CHSPO meeting of Sept. 20, 2007

The meeting was opened at 7 p.m. by President Ed Thorpe.  We began with personal introductions.

Treasurer’s Report

Debra Miles, Treasurer, distributed the Financial Report.   Our current cash balance is $17,344.38   Debra pointed out that fall membership enrollment is low.

Father/Daughter Dances and the Palapalooza

Debra also updated the group on the Father-Daughter Dances.  A magician and DJ are already booked.   Father/Daughter Dances will be Saturday, Jan 27, 2008 and Saturday, Feb 2, 2008.  Tickets will be $32.00.  About 600 people typically attend.  Last year the proceeds were split with 50% going to the Junior Class, 25% going to CHSPO and 25 % going to the CHS Foundation.

The Palapalooza will be the first weekend in March 2008.  In the past, proceeds have been split between CHSPO and the CHS Foundation.

Ed spoke about the logistical problems of handling and splitting money and volunteer time between the groups and suggested that representatives of each group meet to see if there can be a clearer, more workable structure. CHSPO has traditionally raised money for classroom and educator needs and CHS Foundation has traditionally raised money for student scholarships.  There was discussion on the importance of the Dances and the Palapalooza to the community and to the important work that CHSPO and CHS Foundation do.

Carol Riley proposed paying $300 to the CHS Foundation to resolve the 2007 dispersal challenges.  The motion was seconded by Tammy Questi and was approved by the group.

Lunch Time Community Development

Teri Weaver spoke about her work in and around the CHS parking lot at lunchtime.  She reported receiving a letter from a campus neighbor complimenting the improvements.  She is seeing less litter, less congregation for alleged drug dealing and fewer young adult males cruising the parking lot to pick up female students.

Parent Education Forums

These were new last year.  Most forums were lightly attended but much valued by those who did participate.  Suggested topics for this year included revisiting Cops, Cars and You,  Understanding and preventing sexual harassment and Self- Defense training.

Principals Report

Ed Thorpe noted that the meeting agenda has been divided into Organizational and Program Sections. He said that he hoped to expand the Program element of the meeting, working with the administration to bring in key people from the school community to inform and learn from the CHSPO.  A subcommittee could work on the development of programs for the CHSPO meetings and for the community forums.

Ed introduced our new principal, Nancy Faaren.  Nancy told us that there had been a number of technical problems that came with the start of the school year.  Family Access grade book information may not be available until mid-October but she is confident that parents and educators will like the system once it is up and running completely.

Nancy made the group aware of the need for school supplies and P.E. uniforms for some teens.

Ron Gross made a motion for the CHSPO to allocate $400 to the school counselors for the purchase of needed school supplies. Carol Riley seconded the motion.

Beth Schilling pointed out that we should develop a specific line item in the budget for future special purchases.  School supplies are not within our normal grant giving guidelines but are still an appropriate thing for our group to support.    Beth will work with Nancy and Counselors to develop how we should address these needs in the future.

The motion carried by voice vote.

Carol Riley made a motion for the purchase of one dozen P.E. outfits for teens that were in need.   Cori Mayes seconded the motion.  The motion carried by voice vote.

Ed Thorpe distributed an article on modern parenting and commented on generational changes for the better.

Ed recommended that the CHSPO change meeting times back to the second Tuesday of each month.  This means the next meeting will be Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. in the school library.

Nancy Faaren also asked for support of educator team building by supporting a staff time on Friday mornings. The following people volunteered to work with librarian Marni Buckland to develop Staff Support ideas:

Respectfully submitted,

Ellen Rice
