Updates from Site council and School Board discussions: “Listening Post” was an opportunity for parents to give feedback to the school. The hope was to encourage parents to help identify areas of need, brainstorm, and also to give positive feedback where due.
Discussion about IB program ended in deciding to make it more flexible – To develop a new math option for the Senior year To change the two years of science for IB from Biology to Chemistry To eliminate the “pre IB” wording and testing of 8th graders, with the hope that more students will be attracted to the program and there will be a less elitist sound to it To get consistently better English and history classes, and to try to raise the bar for all students at the highschool
There still is difficulty for IB students who take four years of music to fit in the Occupational Education requirement. It was thought that the GenTech class could be taught Zero hour in place of Psychology, but a poll of students showed only a few with the interest/need. Most IB students are having to take summer classes to meet their Occ Ed requirements. This will be an ongoing problem for each entering class now; the requirement used to be waived for IB students. The school is still working on making more classes Occ Ed equivalent, but it involves curriculum changes and the process is slow.
