April 2005 Minutes
School ReportStudents are taking WASL and seem to be approaching it with more seriousness than 2 years ago, which is appreciated. There are activity choices for students who do not have tests. Public Speaking workshop, PE makeups, Open Gym and Library, and Workshops on College and Career planning, Skills for Living away from home, etc. Some of these activity choices will be cancelled unless students sign up for them ahead of time. Mrs. Rae is not planning to be the IB Coordinator next year. She will continue teaching. It is not known yet who will take her place. The school will lose one more employee next year because of decline in enrollment.
Parent ConcernsMore 4th year math options are necessary. Students who are not math whizzes need a senior class which is an option which is not Calculus. A review of Algebra and Geometry would be one option. On the other side, Students who are math whizzes do not have a 4th year of math option now except to go to SPS or Olympia HS for Calculus II, which is impossible if they have full schedules. There are not enough students in that track, however, to offer Calculus II at Capital. Mrs. Poff suggested that a good option may be to have a senior STATISTICS class which is a broad based math college level class useful for all groups, especially students who may do any type of research or business later in their lives. The parents thinking about planning for freshman orientation week in late August requested that the school calendar be available for printing as soon as possible. Since the school was closed in early August it was difficult getting the information needed for orientation. Not enough calendars were printed last year, and there were pieces missing from the orientation packet, such as the activities calendar. We would like to be more organized and present a more complete orientation/registration. It was also suggested that printing maps of all the other schools where games may be played would be good. These maps should be in the orientation packet ( or part of the calendar) and also available at the front office.
ARTS RECOGNITION NIGHTThursday May 19th There have been 30% more entries this year than last, which is another phenomenal jump in student participation and interest, and that is great!!!!!!!!! The budget for the evening is only $800 more than last year, due to the increased number of participants but also to the cost of exhibit stands, which were much needed.
Freshman ClassIs planning a car wash, date still to be set.
Sophomore ClassIs planning a garage sale in June. They are hoping to offer Crafts tables as well. It will be held in the Commons, not the gym, due to reconstruction. If a teacher will volunteer to sponsor the event, then the sophomore class won't have to pay a custodian $30 an hour to stay.
Junior ClassTammy Questi has a Graduation Planning meeting next WEDS with representatives of companies to hire for doing the work of grad night. ASB has decided that the Senior Tea should be replaced by an event which involves the WHOLE school and which will be good for all school spirit. They are planning a whole-school BBQ on June 10th. The school puts on this BBQ, and ASB will cover the cost of cakes. The Junior Class parents just need to serve the cake. It was recommended that the yearbooks be made available then - it will be a good time for the students to write in them, and it will encourage participation so that more students attend the Senior Award ceremony which also happens that day. Palapalooza cleared over $4900 and the 2nd Father Daughter dance cleared over $6200, which will be split between the Foundation and the Parent group. Money from earlier this year was given out as teacher grants to buy a computer projector, technical equipment, sight reading books, and library books. $600 was given to IB Club to help defray the costs of tests, and the IB students worked very hard helping decorate and clean up after every dance. $500 is budgeted from our funds for the staff Luncheon we put on the last (half)day of school, in the Commons. Parents may drop off salads, desserts, and other foods early that morning. MAY 2ND is the deadline for items for the last newsletter, which will be mailed out on the 18th. Please give items to Lynette Elze for submission SOON. Debbie Pattin is still selling Safeway and Top Foods gift cards. For those who shop at Storman's Thriftways (Ralph's and Bayview) we now have cards(free) for you to use when you pay - the card is swiped at the cashier desk and a 1% rebate automatically is sent to the parent organization quarterly. We will put one card in every registration packet in the fall.

And…CHAIRPERSON ????????? Bette Hall has done an outstanding job for two years, and she cannot do it another year - Besides, it is absolutely necessary that OTHER parents from YOUNGER classes learn the ropes, otherwise there will be no one to lead in a year. Since no one has volunteered for Chairperson, and we all recognize the need for that leadership position to be filled, we have decided to break it down into three jobs, which will be possible to fill : 1. Meeting leadership (agenda creator) and point person - Gail Gosney, mother of a sophomore, has kindly volunteered YAY!
- Volunteer help coordinator
- Freshman Orientation coordinator - Bette Hall has volunteered to help whoever is willing to do this - work which has to be done by the end of this August - and then it is DONE . Please call her if you are willing to help. This is fun, and there are lots of other willing hands. We just need a good organizer.
