January 2005 Minutes

The meeting was called to order by Chairman Bette Hall at 7 p.m. The treasurer’s report was given. We currently have a balance of $5622.98.

Debby Pattin reported that so far this year we have mad $1095 on Top Foods cards and $425 on Safeway cards.

Class Reports: SENIORS: The Senior Grad Night has been organized and is currently soliciting participants. Cost of the event is $90. Jennifer Hurley and Karen Hurley are co-chairing this event. JUNIORS: The junior class is hosting a Father/Daughter Dance on January 29. The event is almost sold out and many volunteers are needed to make this a successful evening. We need both junior class members and their parents to help with decorations, food service, etc. PLEASE volunteer your time! SOPHOMORES: No representative of the sophomore class was present. FRESHMAN: The freshman reported on their very successful raffle for glass art and also announced that they would be holding a car wash sometime in the spring.

SCHOOL REPORT: Teri Poff gave a report on the progress of the remodeling project. Things are due to start in a couple of months and the first area to be tackled is the music room. One of the problems that will come with this project is the loss of 30 parking spaces in our parking lot. Parking will not be allowed on Conger Ave. so this is going to add to an already huge shortage of parking. Most likely, parking permits for sophomores will likely be eliminated and students will be encouraged to carpool or find other means of transportation to school.

Kristi Bonds, our school librarian, gave a presentation about some enhancements to the library program. First she thanked our group for the $500 donation which allowed her to purchase some new books which she had on display for our review. She also announced that she will be extending the hours of library operation during finals week by one hour. The room will now be open until 4:30 p.m. to allow students extra time for study. She will also be hosting a Data and Desserts night in the spring for incoming freshmen parents to become acquainted with our library and the services it offers. One bit of disappointing news she offered was that she has been notified that she will be losing about $4000 in funding which is approximately half of her library budget. She is working on ways to compensate for that loss.

Andrea Skaurud gave a report on the progress of the Father/Daughter Dance which will be held on March 19 and jointly sponsored by CHSPO and CHS Foundation. Since many of the things in place for the junior class dance will be used for this function, it looks like we are very prepared for a successful evening.

Bette Hall reported on the Mother/Son Palapalooza which will be held on March 5. Tickets go on sale February 3 and Jeanne McDonald has contacted the Kangaroo Man and made arrangements for entertainment.

Next, Susan Perkins gave a presentation on a project she is initiating called “Speak Easy” which is a public speaking course for teens. Flyers were distributed and she told the group that she would be offering these classes from her home. If you want more information you can contact her at 866-4814 or email her at ssperkins11@aol.com.

Bette had several announcements from the chair. (1) Barnes and Noble has contacted us about doing another bookfair in the spring. After brief discussion, we decided not to accept this offer. We would rather do one annual event and not risk diluting the proceeds. (2) Larry Walsh is in need of one or two parents to participate on a Discipline Committee which will meet twice monthly thru March. Gayle Gosney-Wrede and Lynda Sulenes volunteered. (3) We need to find another Newsletter coordinator ASAP. Gayle Zuckerman is unable to continue with this work and the next deadline for submissions for the next publication is March 11. If you can help with this project, please contact Bette.
  1. Once again, the topic of PE requirements and Occupational Education requirements was brought up. This discussion was repetitive and lengthy but by the end of the evening it was very apparent that everyone’s nerves are getting a bit frayed over this issue and it needs to be fixed as soon as possible. Suggestions such as offering a zero-hour Occ Ed class for the IB students made a lot of sense so we will see if that can be implemented. Further compounding the situation is that March 28 is the date for student registration for fall classes so it would be absolutely wonderful if this could be ironed out by then.

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
