VICA / Skills USA Update
- Scott shared that CHS has joined and has six students log
- The goal for this year is to attend a local conference and gather more information for next year. The VICA club has been meeting every other week at Capital.
Implementing World of Work Expectations
- Scott explained "C" level work
- Maria echoed that "C" students deserve that grade. Nothing wrong with it. If they wanted a better grade they would work toward that.
- Avery liked changes since our last advisory meeting, but initiative isn't clear
- Kevin explained requirements
- The Advanced Contract details, including initiative points at the bottom
- Luke- celebrate the students who are doing initiative points
- Maria- have student tell teacher about what they have done. Maria explained the problem with entitlement attitude - "I deserve this"
- Charlie- What are the expectations for writing?
- Kevin explained issues and
- Slang- casual format a problem
- Avery suggested that the portfolio maybe impetus to write better
- John shared example of relative not grading poorly written work
- Luke supported better technical writing, Maria supported this
- Avery shared his sister's story about writing necessity
- Place writing Expectations/ standards on the wall
- Luke shared ability in blog to fix bad entries
- Discussed how we can reach lower achieving students
- We need their perspective at our meetings
- We need to help these kids better understand Occ. Ed
- We need to help them "get through" tough stuff
- Charlie asked where do our students end up, school? Work? Tech Ed?
- Myspace pros and cons and student issues social norms
- Kevin offered that we recruite advisory members to speak
- How would members like to be contacted?
- John offered the idea of a letter
- Luke state that initial contact by phone or email and follow-up with letter detailing what the students want covered would work well
- Luke stated that the letter acts as a reminder and reference
Action Items
- Get dates for VICA Published on website
- Invite student that aren't performing well
- Set up program promotional picture views in the CHS Commons
- Get Best Buy to donate big screen for photos, ala Rusty Cock Ridge
